Eureka girls open the new volleyball season at Chico tournament

Submitted photo – The Eureka girls opened the new volleyball season at Chico on Saturday.

The Eureka Loggers opened the new volleyball season at the 24-team Chico tournament on Saturday, going 1-3 on opening day.

The Loggers went 1-2 in pool play, losing to Colfax (2-1) and University (2-0), before defeating Red Bluff (2-1).

They then advanced to the tournament Silver Bracket where they fell to Casa Grande.

Several players opened the season with an impressive showing at the tournament, most notably Aniah Gaither, Anisha Rechelluul and Mariah Napoleon.

Gaither finished with a team-high 25 kills over the four matches, as well as posting six blocks, while Napoleon was equally impressive with 24 kills and three blocks.

Rechelluul dished out a team-best 58 assists, an average of 14.5 a game.

Isis Poteet also displayed a lot of potential and finished with eight kills and two blocks, while Maeghan Hampton added nine kills.

Pule Fonoti also impressed at the service line, and had seven aces on the day.

The Eureka girls will continue a busy preseason this weekend, playing at Casa Grande on Friday and at the NorCal tournament at Novato High School on Saturday.

McKinleyville and Del Norte each also made the trip to the Chico tournament. No stats were immediately available for either team.
