By Ray Hamill — The success of the H-DNL begins with the coaching and that continued to be the case this year.
League-wide we saw some outstanding coaches in every sport, particularly in basketball and softball.
And with that in mind, here are the finalists for our 2021/22 High School Coach of the Year.
Our Coach of the Year is one of six awards we will be handing out next week, along with our Little 4 and Big 5 Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year and our Team of the Year.
And this year, thanks to our awards sponsors — The Stove Doctors, Six Rivers Property Management and Mendes Supply Company — we will be handing out plaques to recognize the winners in all six categories.
Here then are the 12 finalists for our 2021/22 High School Coach of the Year …

Terra Albee
Terra Albee, Ferndale Girls Basketball
What a year it was for Albee and her players, who won both a Little 4 and NCS championship and went undefeated against H-DNL opposition during the regular season.
Ryan Colegrove, Hoopa Softball
Colegrove has established herself as one of the best softball coaches in the H-DNL after winning a second straight NCS championship this year and doing so with an almost completely different group of players.
Troy Ghisetti, Arcata Baseball
Arguably the best baseball coach on the North Coast, Ghisetti won his 400th game with the Tigers this year on the way to a co-Big 5 and Charlie Lakin Tournament championship double.
Issac Gildea, St. Bernard’s Boys Basketball
Gildea rallied his players after a heartbreaking defeat on the final night of the regular season and guided them to six straight playoffs wins on the way to an historic NCS and NorCal championship double.
Mike Harvey, Eureka Girls Basketball
The longtime local coach led the Loggers to a memorable Big 5 and Dick Niclai Tournament championship double.

Ryan Colegrove

Shanna McCracken
Daniel Holmes, Fortuna Boys Soccer
All Holmes does is win, and that continued this year with an eighth straight league championship.
Robin Johnson, Eureka Softball
It was an impressive debut season for the varsity coach, who won 27 games, came within one run of winning the program’s first-ever NCS championship, and reached the final four in the Loggers’ NorCal bracket.
Shanna McCracken, McKinleyville Softball
Like Colegrove, McCracken won a second straight NCS championship this year with just one player from the last championship team.
Taylor Morrow, South Fork Boys Basketball
When you lead your team to a first league title in almost 30 years, you get listed as a finalist for the Humboldt Sports 2022 High School Coach of the Year.
Clinton Schaad, Del Norte Wrestling
It was another big winter for the Warriors on the mats, with Schaad guiding the program to a first-ever H-DNL championship double, with both the boys and girls teams winning a league title.
Matt Tomlin, St. Bernard’s Football and Baseball
The longtime St. Bernard’s coach arguably had his most impressive year on the sidelines, in both football and baseball, including winning an historic NCS and NorCal championship double in the latter.
Nick White, Del Norte Football
White has quickly established himself as one of the best football coaches in the H-DNL and guided the Warriors to another big season and another Big 4 championship.
