The Northern Humboldt Giants got the new American Legion baseball season off to a winning start on Friday, defeating the Humboldt Eagles 7-1 in Arcata.

Several Del Norte plays impressed in the win, as well as two incoming high school players who should have a bright future in the Big 5.

Del Norte’s Ethan Thomas pitched five solid innings for the win, allowing just one earned run and striking out two.

His high school teammate William Bommelyn led the way at the plate and finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Eighth-grader Tanner Kees enjoyed a big debut with the team and finished 2-for-3, while last summer’s McKinleyville Little League standout, Joe Tanno, pitched two strong innings in relief of Thomas to seal the victory.

Tanno, who was voted the 2021 Humboldt Sports Male Athlete of the Year, allowed just one hit and no walks and struck out three.

Ty Ghisetti also was 2-for-3 in the win, while Miles Oliver, Ben Lukens, Saxton Taylor and Cole Blackburn each also had a base hit.

Tyler Schlesiger had the offensive highlight of the game with a first-inning home run for the Eagles’ only run.
