By Ray Hamill — Only two teams have ever won a Charlie Lakin Tournament championship in the brief history of the H-DNL postseason baseball tournament.
And the same two teams will face off once again in the 2022 decider at the Arcata Ball Park on Saturday night.
The first tournament winners back in 2015, Arcata, will play four-time defending champions Eureka, with first pitch set for 7 p.m.
The championship showdown will also be a tiebreaker to determine which of these two co-Big 5 champions gets the league’s automatic North Coast Section berth.
Eureka is currently ranked No. 6 in NCS Division III, according to MaxPreps, while Arcata is a comfortable No. 1 in Division IV and likely to get a top seed regardless of Saturday’s outcome.
Either way, both teams will be eager to win a tournament championship, and it should be a good game after a competitive league campaign by both teams.
The Tigers are 22-3 and won two of the three league matchups against the Loggers, who are 16-9.
If the Tigers do win, it will give them a first-ever Big 5 and Lakin double, while the Loggers are looking for their third double, having also achieved the feat in 2017 and 2018.
Just as importantly, next week the Loggers will be looking for their first NCS win since 2015, having bowed out in the first round in each of the past four NCS tournaments.
This year’s team, however, appears well-equipped to end that run, especially when junior ace Myles Standish takes the mound.
The Tigers, on the other hand, will be looking to secure a second straight NCS crown when the playoffs get under way next week, having won in 2019 when many of this year’s team were just freshmen.
Both teams will find out their NCS seed and opening-round opponents on Sunday.
