Thursday’s Charlie Lakin games get the go-ahead

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Colt Chamberlain and the Fortuna Huskies will play the Arcata Tigers at the Arcata Ball Park on Thursday at 4 p.m.

By Ray Hamill — The H-DNL announced early Thursday afternoon that that the Charlie Lakin Tournament semifinals will go ahead as scheduled.

After concerns that the weather would force a postponement of Thursday’s four baseball and softball games, the league has given the go-ahead.

The softball tournament is being played at the Arcata Sports Complex.

The semifinals get under way when Del Norte plays Eureka at 5 p.m., followed by Hoopa and McKinleyville at 7.

The baseball tournament is being played at the Arcata Ball Park, and Thursday’s semifinals will see Arcata play Fortuna at 4 p.m. and Eureka play St. Bernard’s at 7.

The two championship games will be played Saturday at 5 p.m. (softball) and 7 p.m. (baseball).

Playing the semifinals on Thursday also frees up the Arcata and Eureka baseball teams to play their scheduled Big 5 playoff game on Friday to determine the league’s automatic qualifier for the North Coast Section playoffs.

If the two teams both qualify for Saturday’s Lakin championship game, they will use that as the tiebreaker instead in order to avoid an extra game at such a busy time of the season.

If Friday’s game goes ahead, first pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Bomber Field in Eureka.
