By Ray Hamill — Senior McKenna Beach is closing out her high school career in impressive fashion.

Beach has been on fire at the plate recently, and that continued on Thursday evening as the Eureka Loggers defeated the Del Norte Warriors 3-0 in the Charlie Lakin Tournament semifinals at the Arcata Sports Complex.

The senior catcher, who will play at Cal Poly Humboldt after graduation, finished 3-for-3 in what was another closely contested game between these two Big 5 rivals.

Kira Morris was equally effective in the pitcher’s circle and allowed just two hits in a complete-game shutout, while striking out 14.

Kaitlin Giacone also had a good game for the Eureka girls and finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Morris was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Payton Goodman also had a hit in the win, as the Loggers improved to 23-1.

The victory sets up a championship showdown against Hoopa on Saturday at 5 p.m. after the Little 4 champs got the better of McKinleyville 3-2 in the other semifinal on Thursday.

Despite losing to Eureka for the fourth time this season, the Del Norte girls have matched up well against the Big 5 champs in all four games.

Sophomore pitcher McKenna Curtis gave the Eureka bats all they could handle once again on Thursday, allowing just five hits in the loss and striking out 10.

Three Del Norte errors did not help.

Sisters Josephine and Alexis Heuberger each had a base hit for Del Norte.

The Warriors, who dropped to 15-9 on the season, will find out their playoff seed on Sunday and they will open the North Coast Section Division-IV tournament next week.
