Brackets finalized for Charlie Lakin tournaments

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – The Eureka boys open tournament play against South Fork at the Arcata Ball Park on Wednesday.

By Ray Hamill — With the Arcata Tigers securing a share of the Big 5 championship in baseball on Tuesday, the brackets for this week’s Charlie Lakin tournaments in baseball and softball have now been finalized.

The Tigers will receive a No. 1 seed, courtesy of their better head-to-head record with co-champs Eureka, and will have an opening-day bye.

Little 4 champion St. Bernard’s will also have a first-round bye.

The baseball tournament opens at the Arcata Ball Park on Wednesday afternoon. Fortuna plays Ferndale at 4 p.m., followed by Eureka and South Fork at 7 p.m.

The winner of the Fortuna/Ferndale game will play Arcata in the first of Thursday’s semifinals, and the winner of the Eureka/South Fork game will play St. B Bernard’s in the second semi.

If Arcata and Eureka both qualify for the championship game, they will use that showdown to determine the Big 5’s automatic qualifier for the North Coast Section playoffs. If not, they will meet in a playoff game at Eureka on Friday at 4 p.m.

The Charlie Lakin softball tournament also gets under way at the Arcata Sports Complex on Wednesday, with Del Norte playing South Fork at 5 p.m. and McKinleyville playing St. Bernard’s at 7 p.m.

Eureka and Hoopa are No. 1 seeds and have an opening-day bye.

Eureka will play the winner of the South Fork/Del Norte in the first of Thursday’s semifinals, followed by Hoopa and the winner of the Mack/St. Bernard’s game.

Both tournament championship games will be played Saturday evening — softball at 5 p.m. and baseball at 7 p.m.
