Makayla Bernald named conference pitcher of the year

Former Arcata Tiger Makayla Bernald has been named Bay Valley Conference softball pitcher of the year after an impressive spring playing for Mendocino College.

Bernald’s big season helped the Eagles to a second-place finish in the conference with a 9-3 record (16-16-1 overall).

The 2020 Arcata High graduate tied for the conference lead with five wins on the season, while posting an ERA of 3.87 in conference play with 66 strikeouts in 59.2 innings.

Bernald also had a big impact for her team at the plate.

The former Tiger batted .321 for the season with 10 doubles, the latter of which was second best in conference.

Another former Arcata Tigers pitcher, Raina Ausburn, has also committed to play at Mendocino College.

Ausburn, who is now a senior at McKinleyville High and enjoying a big season with the Panthers, will join the Eagles next year.
