By Ray Hamill — Arcata head coach Troy Ghisetti celebrated his 400th win in charge of the Tigers on Friday night and he says he has no intention of slowing down any time soon.
The long-time legendary local coach, who is as respected among his peers as any in H-DNL sports, got the milestone victory in a 2-0 win over Big 5 rival McKinleyville on Friday night.
And afterwards he paid tribute to all the players and assistant coaches he has worked with in his 25 years in charge of the Arcata program.
“This is not an award for me, it’s recognition for all the players and assistant coaches that have helped me through the years,” he said. “They show up every single year. It’s a nice milestone for Arcata High. ”
Ghisetti took over the team in 1997 and has won two North Coast Section championships during his time in charge, in 2016 and 2019.
And reaching 400 wins is something other coaches in the league feel is pretty special.
“That’s awesome,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said of the achievement.
Tomlin actually played American Legion baseball for Ghisetti when he was 16-years-old.
“I consider him one of the best coaches I’ve ever played for,” the St. Bernard’s head coach said. “There’s nobody I respect more than coach Ghisetti. He’s a coach I still look up to today and he’s a coach I call for advice. There’s nobody that’s been better.”
McKinleyville head coach Scott St. John also paid tribute to Ghisetti after the milestone win.
“I have nothing but the utmost respect for him as a coach,” he said. “He’s the gold standard in Humboldt County.”
And St. John believes it’s an achievement Arcata High should celebrate.
“That’s quite an accomplishment,” he said. “It’s something he should be proud of and something the school should be proud of.”
Now that 400 wins has been achieved, the question is how long before Ghisetti makes it 500.
And considering he says he has no intention of stepping down any time soon, it’s surely only a matter of time.
Congratulations coach on a memorable achievement.
