Zach Cole had an afternoon he won’t easily forget on Friday, leading the College of the Redwoods baseball team to a comprehensive 26-9 win at Shasta.
The Alaska native finished 3-for-4 with a pair of grand slams, as the Corsairs remained red-hot at the plate and racked up 26 hits.
The win was the third straight for the CR men, who improved to 3-7 in the Golden Valley Conference and 9-14 overall.
The CR bats have averaged just under 16 runs a game in that winning streak.
Taylor Steig also had a big afternoon in the win and was 5-for-6 with a three-run home run and six RBIs, while Jake Agarwal added five hits and Evan Stauch four.
Former Arcata Tiger Jaden Gorge was 2-for-5 for Shasta with an RBI and a run, as the Struggling Knights dropped their fifth straight and fell to 2-9 in conference play and 7-17 overall.
Chandler Jones got the win on the mound, striking out six in seven innings.
The Corsairs took control early with seven runs in the top of the first.
After the home team answered with four runs in the bottom of the third to pull back into contention, the CR men scored 17 unanswered runs over the next five innings to pull away.
The two teams will close out a three-game weekend series when they play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
