The Arcata Tigers got the new baseball season off to a wining start at the St. Bernard’s tournament on Friday, winning a pair of games at the Bear River Sports Complex.
The Arcata boys had to battle in their opener, edging University Prep 3-2, before cruising to a comfortable 13-0 win over Middletown in six innings.
Vincent Agliolo got the win on the mound in the opener in a game that was deadlocked 0-0 until the sixth inning.
The Arcata senior went the distance and gave up no earned runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out seven.
He also had a double at the plate, as did teammates Will Mager and Anthony Ebert, while Miles Oliver rounded out a four-hit team performance.
Both pitchers played well, but the Tigers got the breakthrough with three runs in the top of the sixth and were able to hold on after that.
The Arcata bats came out swinging in game two, with an experienced lineup hitting four home runs in the win.
Mager was 3-for-3 with a home run, while Nick Parker and Finn McRae each finished 2-for-4 with a home run.
Ebert, a freshman, capped a big day at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a home run.
McRae got the win on the mound, pitching five strong innings in relief of Mager.
McRae allow just two hits and two walks and struck out seven.

Agliolo also had two hits, including a double, while Oliver and Alex Gorge each went 1-for-3.
“I thought we had a better approach at the plate in the second game,” head coach Troy Ghisetti said. “I thought we were a tad nervous at the plate in the first game.”
With the two wins the Tigers will play in the tournament championship game against either St. Bernard’s or McKinleyville on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Bear River Sports Complex.
