Eureka sophomore Talon Vigil took over first place in the H-DNL boys golf standings with a victory in round two of league play at the Redwood Empire Golf and Country Club on Monday.
Vigil shot a 77, the best round of the early season in league play, and led the field by four strokes, with McKinleyville’s Mitchell Lyell second best on the day with an 81.
Arcata’s Mason Alway had the third best score with an 84, followed by St. Bernard’s Jack Kramer, Fortuna’s Adam Calvert and Lucas Senestraro and Arcata’s Brayden Horner, each of whom shot a 93.
Eureka’s Julian Goodman, South Fork’s Trevor Hunt and Fortuna’s Logan Calvert each shot a 94.
Eureka took the team win, beating Arcata by seven strokes, with five Loggers shooting under 100.
In addition to Vigil and Goodman, teammates Jerome Lyons (96), Andrew Stewart (97) and Wyatt Zerlang (98) each also had good days.
The Arcata Tigers were second on the day and remain first in the team season standings, just two strokes ahead of the Loggers in what is shaping up to be an exciting race for this year’s championship.
Arcata’s Beck Pederson shot a 96 and teammate Quinton Westfall posted a 98, giving the Tigers four golfers under 100.
Del Norte’s Blake Larson led the Warriors with a round of 98.
The next round of league play will take place at Eureka.
