Gerard Marshall capped an outstanding season with a memorable showing at this week’s CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield on Saturday, finishing in the top 12 in the heavyweight division.

The Hoopa standout made it to day three of the highly-competitive tournament before losing to Christian Smith out of Clovis High, the No. 5 heavyweight in the state.

Smith won on a 5-1 decision.

A victory would have seen Marshall advance to at least the seventh-place matchup and he closes out a memorable few days with a record of 3-2, including winning two straight elimination matches on Friday after going 1-1 on opening day.

The showing was particularly impressive considering Marshall is just a junior, and the experience should stand to him next year.

Marshall also won a league title and North Coast Section championship on his way to the state finals.

Three other H-DNL wrestlers also competed in Bakersfield this week, including two who won matches.

Arcata junior Joshua Hannan finished 2-2 in the 126-pound boys division in his first trip to the state championships.

Del Norte senior Savannah Williams also closed out a memorable season with a victory in the girls 131 bracket, finishing 1-2, while Eureka freshman Lucia Romero finished 0-2.
