The Del Norte girls wrestling team placed first in six of the 14 weight classes at last weekend’s H-DNL championships in Crescent City on the way to a first-ever league title.
It was an historic day for the Warriors, who also won the boys team event, giving them a first-ever double championship in the sport.
Sophomore Channey Schaad placed first at 108 pounds for her first-ever league title, while teammates Noelani Foust (113), Savannah Williams (133), Judit Alvares (139), Adenne Schaad (152) and Aliana Sciple-Cron (189) each also won their weight divisions.
The Eureka Loggers, who have dominated the sport locally in recent years, continued to impress and had three individual champions, as did Fortuna, with Arcata claiming two championships.
At 103, Fortuna’s Chloe Cox defeated Hoopa’s Vanessa King in the championship round, while at 118, Fortuna’s Nanice Ford defeated Eureka’s Katann Sisk in the decider, and at 123, Eureka’s Camille Shaver got the better of Fortuna’s Tristan Jones in the championship round.
Eureka’s Maize Fugate also won at 145, getting the better of Hoopa’s Stormie Lewis for the championship, while teammate Leilianna Brown won at 170, defeating Arcata’s Brooke Nix, and Fortuna’s Lonah Torrez won at 235, defeating Eureka’s Lucia Romero for the title.
Arcata’s Haley Kenyon and Piper Bjorkstedt each also took home a championship.
Kenyon defeated Del Norte’s Taylor Zwierlein at 128 and Bjorkstedt got the better of Del Norte’s Autumn Thompson at 160.
The Warriors’ team victory was achieved with a young squad, with Channey Schaad, Foust and Sciple-Cron all sophomores, and the latter already claiming a second championship.
Alvarez is also just a first-year wrestler, while Williams and Adenne Schaad each won their third league title in just three years competing at the high school level.
Eureka’s Brooke Boone (133), Rebeka Hans (139) and Andrea Vlazco-Quiroz (189) each also placed second, as did Arcata’s Gabrielle Ducate (108) and St. Bernard’s Rory Bickmore (152)
Del Norte’s Abbigail (118) and Alissa Roach (123) each also placed third in their brackets.
The league’s top wrestlers will now turn their attention to the North Coast Section championships, which begin in Albany on Friday and will run through Saturday.
