South Fork boys top Ferndale in Little 4 opener

The South Fork Cubs returned to action for the first time in a few weeks and opened league play with a 46-40 win over Ferndale in boys basketball on Friday night.

Tommy Rotbergs set the tone early with a big first quarter in the win and finished with a team-high 13 points.

Rotbergs also hit a big 3-pointer late in the game to give the Cubs a cushion.

John Harding and Oliver Tatton each added 11 points in the win, while teammate Shevy Bero chipped in nine points, including four clutch free throws late in the game to help seal the win.

With the win, the Cubs are now 1-0 in the Little 4 and 7-1 overall.

Jack Westfall continued to lead the way for Ferndale, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Kannon Christiansen also continued to impress with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

“It was a tough loss and we have our work cut out for us, but we know what we are capable of when we are clicking,” Ferndale head coach Tristen Waters said. “This team is resilient. When they are against the odds, they just keep on pushing.”

The Ferndale boys dropped to 0-1 in the L4 and 3-8 overall.

Both teams will be back in action next Thursday, when South Fork plays at Hoopa and  Ferndale hosts St. Bernard’s.
