The Fortuna Huskies won their final pre-league game in girls basketball on Monday night, but they had to battle for it, holding on late for a 54-51 victory over Hoopa.
The Warriors clawed their way back from an 18-point second-half deficit to make things interesting late.
“Hoopa did a great job of getting offensive rebounds,” Fortuna head coach Tom Chapman said. “I was impressed with how well they attacked the glass and gave themselves second and third opportunities to score.”
Teal Mostovoy continued to impress for the Huskies and finished with a team-high 17 points, while teammate Haylee Youkey also was instrumental in the win.
“Haylee Youkey did a great job shooting the ball tonight,” Chapman said of the junior, who finished with 15 points. “I was really pleased with how she created opportunities to score.”
Ashley Tully also had a good night, finishing with nine points for the Huskies, who were missing some players because of COVID protocols.
With the win, the Huskies improved to 8-8.
The Warriors, meanwhile, were led by Tatianna Colegrove who scored a game-high 20 points.
Ivy Lamebear also had a big night and helped key the rally with 12 points, while Harmony Nelson finished with 10 points and Savannah Colegrove six.
Both teams tip off league play this week.
The Huskies play at McKinleyville on Wednesday, while the Warriors play at St. Bernard’s on Friday.
