Eureka boys, Mack girls get set to host tournaments this week

By Ray Hamill — Get ready for another busy week of high school basketball, with two local varsity tournaments scheduled and multiple H-DNL teams playing at both of them.

At Eureka High, the annual boys Logger Classic will tip off on Thursday and the six-team bracket will feature four local teams, with Fortuna, Ferndale and McKinleyville all joining the host school for the three-day event, along with Shasta and Brookings-Harbor.

The opening day will feature an early-season rematch between the Loggers and Panthers, with the latter getting the batter of exchanges when the two met at last week’s Arcata tournament.

The two Big 5 rivals play at 7:30 p.m.

Also on opening day, Ferndale plays Shasta at 4:30 p.m. and Fortuna and Brookings-Harbor play at 6 p.m.

McKinleyville’s Cody Whitmer placed first in the 3-point contest at the Arcata tournament last week.

The McKinleyville girls tournament, meanwhile, features four teams and will have a round-robin format with two games on each of the three days.

The action gets under way on Thursday, when Eureka plays Fortuna at 5:30 p.m., followed by McKinleyville and Yreka at 7.

Both Arcata teams, meanwhile, will travel to play at the Red Bluff tournament, which also gets under way on Thursday and runs for three days.

The Arcata girls open against Enterprise and the boys open against University Prep.

After a break in action this past weekend, the Del Norte boys will be at the Anderson tournament, while the Ferndale girls will be at Kelseyville tournament.

The St. Bernard’s girls and boys teams will both be idle this week.
