After a long delay on the way to Mt. Shasta, it took the St. Bernard’s girls a little while to get going on Thursday afternoon.

But once they did, they were able to continue their impressive start to the new season, running out to a 50-40 win over Lassen to open play at the Mt. Shasta tournament.

The Crusaders arrived at the gymnasium just 20 minutes before tip off and were matched stride for stride through the opening two quarters.

“Our kids had to adjust and I think they did a pretty good job of adjusting in the second half,” head coach Augie Valdez said of his players. “They really refocused in the second half.”

Lele Tanuvasa scored a game-high 24 points in the win, as the Crusaders outscored Lassen 22-14 over the final two quarters.

Laila Florvilus also continued to impress and finished with 17 points, while Madelyn Shanahan made her presence felt in the paint and did a good job defensively, particularly on the boards.

Amaiyah Her also played well defensively, while chipping in five points.

The Crusaders (4-0) will continue tourney play on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
