Stewart steps up as CR women win at Shasta tourney

College of the Redwoods Athletics – Kendall Stewart

The College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team won its opener at the Shasta College tournament on Friday, defeating conference rival Lassen 63-46.

Freshmen Kendall Stewart from Fortuna stepped up in the win and had her best game yet at the collegiate level, finishing with 10 points.

“This was her game,” assistant coach Darren Turpin said. “She came out and showed what she’s about. She’s getting more comfortable every day with this team.”

The game was first in two weeks for the Corsairs, who improved to 6-3.

It was also their second straight game against Lassen, although this was a much more comprehensive performance than the 57-54 victory at the Sierra College tournament.

“I thought it was a good overall team win,” Turpin said. “The energy was much, much better.”

The CR coaches had stressed playing competitively for all 40 minutes at both ends of the court, and the players responded.

Sophomore Ashley Quigley scored a team-high 15 points in the win, while freshman Gracie Betts, another Fortuna player, also continued to impress in her first season with the team, adding 13 points.

The CR women will continue tournament play on Saturday when they play Porterville at noon.
