Great defense keys big HSU rally in CCAA opener

The Humboldt State women opened conference play with their second straight win on the basketball court on Thursday night, beating San Francisco State 58-56 at Lumberjack Arena.

The Jacks rallied from a nine-point deficit in the final 10 minutes, thanks in part to some outstanding defense, and held the visitors to just 32 percent shooting while forcing 18 turnovers.

Julia Iman led HSU with 21 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Madison Parry added 18 points and six rebounds.

With the win, the Jacks improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference.

Also on Thursday night, the HSU men suffered their first loss of the season, falling 84-80 in overtime to San Francisco State.

Will Johnson scored a game-high 20 points for the Jacks, who are now 5-1 and 0-1.

Both HSU teams will play a second home conference game against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30.
