Busy week of action on tap in local college basketball

By Ray Hamill — Get ready for a big week of action on the local college basketball courts, with key games for the College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State men’s and women’s teams.

The CR men, who are off to a 5-1 start, will host the annual Coach Tregs Classic with an expanded lineup this season.

The three-day, eight-team tournament gets under way on Thursday, with the host Corsairs opening against West Hills Coalinga at 6 p.m.

The CR women will also be in action this week, when they travel to play at the Shasta College tournament, which gets under way on Friday.

The Corsairs are 5-3 after a 57-54 win over Lassen in their last outing on Nov. 20.

Both Humboldt State teams also have key games this week, as the Jacks open conference play at home.

The HSU men are 5-0 and off to their best start since 2011/12 after defeating Dominican 74-68 on Saturday.

The HSU women (1-3) also defeated Dominican on Saturday, ending a three-game losing streak with a 66-49 win.

Both HSU teams will play conference games against San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday and Saturday.

The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. on both days and the men at 7:30.
