Ortega, Owsley lead the local charge at NCS cross country championships

Arcata’s Jude Ortega led the H-DNL in Saturday’s North Coast Section Division-4 Cross Country championships in Hayward, placing ninth overall.

The senior standout, who has dominated the rest of the league all season, finished the three-mile course in a time of 16 minutes, 5.7 seconds.

Eureka junior Daniel Shaver had the second best local showing of the day, placing 40th in a time of 17:12.4.

Arcata freshman Luke Moxon capped a big debut season in high school by placing 67th in a time of 17:52.4, followed by teammate Andrew Trieu in 87th (18:28.5).

A fourth Arcata runner, freshman Camden Narwold, was 94th, while Eureka’s Wyatt Zerlang (104th) and James Coleman (106th) placed just outside the top 100.

Arcata placed 13th as a team, with Eureka five spots back in 18th.

Big PR for Owsley in Division-4 girls race

The H-DNL had two teams place in the top nine in the girls Division-4 race, with Arcata placing seventh and Eureka ninth.

Fortuna’s Ella Owsley led the local charge individually, placing 23rd overall and breaking the 20-minute mark for the first time ever.

The impressive junior knocked almost 30 seconds off her previous best time in a three-mile race and finished in 19:59.5.

Eureka’s Charlotte Leonard was just two spots and less than two seconds back with a time of 20:01.0.

Arcata’s Gabrielle Ducate (20:17.5) and Ai-Lan McGoldrick (20:22.8) placed 27th and 28th, followed by Eureka’s Stasha Leonard (20:30.3) in 32nd.

Arcata’s Alauna Thompson (45th), Eureka’s Sequoia Ashby (47th) and Arcata’s Raven Alvarez (49th) each also had strong showings at the big meet, as did Arcata’s Lillian Cunningham in 52nd and Sydney Trieu in 53rd.

Fortuna’s Gabby Crosswhite was 59th and Eureka’s Maggie Odell was 70th and Anna Grimmett 77th.

Rounding out the local contingent in the Division-4 girls race was Arcata’s Sasha Love (89th) and Eureka’s Alexandra Panarra (101st).

Boys Division 5

In the boys Division-5 race, McKinleyville’s Damian Dinan capped a big season with another strong showing and placed 16th overall in a time of 16:35.9,

Mack’s Cody Rheinschmidt was 29th in a time of 17:04.9, while teammate William Hufford placed 94th.

McKinleyville placed 12th as a team.
