ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — A good week for the Loggers

By Ray Hamill — When you win an NCS championship, you’ve got a pretty good chance of being included among our Athletes and Team of the Week honors, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

And after their big win in Saturday’s enthralling NCS soccer championship game at McKinleyville High School, the Eureka girls are our team of the week this week.

And the awards for the Loggers don’t end there.

Senior Payton Goodman is one of our athletes of the week after closing out her high school soccer career with a unique achievement.

Goodman was the only senior on the team and was also a member of the 2018 Eureka championship team, giving her the distinction of being the only ever two-time NCS champion in Big 5 girls soccer.

Joining the Loggers among this week’s honorees is a Fortuna soccer player who did everything he could to help his team in its pursuit of a section title, even if the Huskies ultimately came up just shy.

Antonio Garcinuno has been a standout contributor for Fortuna soccer since breaking into the team as a freshmen four years ago and leaves an impressive legacy in his wake.

Opposing players might be relieved to finally see Garcinuno walk away from the H-DNL, but fans will most definitely miss watching him play.

The quick-footed winger was electrifying all season and has been as instrumental as anyone in the Huskies’ remarkable success over the past few years.

The season may not have ended the way Garcinuno and his teammates would have liked, but that doesn’t take from what the talented senior has achieved during his high school career, including a pair of NCS championships.

Goodman played a pivotal role for her team all season, helping to anchor a strong defense and providing a pivotal leadership role on such a young team.

An NCS winner in 2018 and 2021, she closes out her high school soccer career as the most successful Big 5 player in the history of NCS girls soccer.

And that leads us on to our team of the week …

Eureka Girls Soccer

The Loggers saved the best for last with an inspirational showing in the NCS championship game.

After losing twice to Arcata earlier this season, the ever-improving Eureka girls dug deep to win this time around, holding a potent Tigers offense in check with an outstanding defensive performance.

The section title is the second for this program in four years and it likely would have been a third championship had the NCS tournament been played last season.

But this group is a very different one to the team that won in 2018, and it’s a group that has established its own legacy.

It’s also a team that could very well compete for another NCS crown in each of the next two years.
