Arcata girls make it official with another big win

The Tigers made it official on Saturday, clinching the Big 5 girls soccer championship outright with an 8-1 win at Del Norte.

The Arcata girls were crowned at least co-champs on Wednesday with a big 2-0 win at Eureka, but they needed at least one more tie in their final two games to claim the title outright.

They got that and more with a dominating display against the young Warriors.

Alia Prentiss scored five of her team’s eight goals to lead the way and also assisted on another.

Kyla Berman also netted twice and had an assist, while Soqui Macdonald followed a big performance in Wednesday’s win with a goal.

Zoe Macknicki added two assists, while Gracie Townsend had one.

The Arcata girls, who are the top ranked team in North Coast Section fall soccer, will celebrate a stellar senior class before Wednesday’s regular season home finale against McKinleyville.

They will kick off the NCS playoffs the following week.

At Saturday’s game, the Del Norte boys and girls teams gave a card of support to Arcata head coach Patrick Stranahan and his wife Melissa Morrison, who is battling ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

“A real awesome gesture,” Stranahan said. “I was touched.”

Stranahan and Melissa are widely respected throughout the North Coast for all the work they have done for the local soccer community over the past two decades.

Earlier this year, the Eureka teams also showed their support for the couple.
