What a week for one local school

By Ray Hamill — It’s not often you see one school in the H-DNL enjoy a week like the Arcata Tigers did this week.

Especially the Arcata girls.

On Monday, the Tigers claimed a team league title in girls golf, and they followed that just 24 hours later with a big win over Del Norte on the volleyball court in a Big 5 winner-takes-all showdown.

That on its own would have been impressive, but the Tigers weren’t done yet, not by a long shot.

On Wednesday night, the Arcata girls soccer team also claimed at least a share of the Big 5 title with a 2-0 win over closest challengers Eureka.

The Arcata girls now need just a tie in their final two games to clinch the pennant outright, which they will likely do at Del Norte on Saturday.

Add to that an H-DNL girls tennis championship, which the Tigers clinched on Saturday, and it’s been quite a week for the school’s sports teams.

And it’s not done yet.

A red-hot Tigers football team has won five straight games and can also clinch at least a share of the Little 4 title with a win at Ferndale on Saturday.

And don’t forget cross country.

On Tuesday, senior Jude Ortega and junior Ai-Lan McGoldrick both won again for Arcata in H-DNL cross country as they and their teams appear headed to league championships.

The talented duo have won all nine H-DNL races they have combined to compete in this season and they will take some stopping at the upcoming league championships.

All in all, the Tigers are poised to win an incredible seven of the eight team titles they are competing for this fall, with only the boys soccer team not winning a pennant, and that team looks like it will place second in conference.

And individually, they could very well claim four of the five league titles that are up for grabs this fall — boys cross country, girls cross country, girls tennis singles and girls tennis doubles .
