Sundberg caps H-DNL championship with another strong showing

McKinleyville’s Sofie Sundberg capped an impressive fall in H-DNL girls golf with another victory on Monday.

The junior standout shot a season-best round of 89 at the Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata, knocking six strokes off her previous best round of the season.

It was also Sundberg’s sixth win in seven rounds this season and saw her clinch the season championship by an impressive 63 strokes.

St. Bernard’s Olivia Benneker, who is the only other golfer to beat Sundberg this season, had the second-best score on the day, shooting a 93.

Eureka’s Ileah Brannon shot a 108 for third, followed by Arcata’s Sagen Sarchett, who shot a  109.

St. Bernard’s Hannah Finck, Del Norte’s Jo Heuberger and Arcata’s Madyson Nelson each shot a 112 to tie for fifth, with Arcata’s Iris Coonrad (115), McKinleyville’s Neyr’res Bartoo (117) and Arcata’s Morgan Ford (119) rounding out the top 10.

Sundberg won the season title with a combined score of 588, followed by Brannon (651), Arcata’s Avery Meadows (677), Ford (687), Sarchett (693), Coonrad (701), Heuberger (704), St. Bernard’s Allyson Hagler (707), Eureka’s Mia Lopez (711), Bartoo (719), Eureka’s Gracie Christian (721) and St. Bernard’s Hannah Finck (726).

The Arcata Tigers were crowned league champs with their fourth straight team win, out-distancing Eureka by an impressive 57 strokes in the final round.

The Tigers ended up winning the team championship by 118 strokes.

Eureka placed second, followed by McKinleyville, Del Norte, St. Bernard’s and Fortuna.

The North Coast Section postseason gets under way on Monday at the Blue Rocks Springs Golf Course in Vallejo.

The NCS playoff field will be announced on Wednesday.
