The Eureka girls broke open a tight game with three second-half goals on the way to a 4-1 win at McKinleyville on Wednesday night.

In other H-DNL action on Wednesday, Fortuna defeated Del Norte 2-0.

The Loggers, who improved to 6-1-2 in the Big 5, led 1-0 at halftime and pulled away after the interval with their best performance of the season, according to head coach Tommy Learmouth.

“I was very happy with the win,” the coach said. “I thought that was the best game we’ve played. We were relaxed, confident and smart on the ball.

“The girls were rewarded with some big goals. It was just a great team performance.”

Sophomore Ella Tollefson scored from the penalty spot and played her best game of the season, Learmouth said, while the industrious Kiara Morris added two goals and Lila Ekholdt also scored.

“Kiara was just constant energy and effort running after the ball,” Learmouth said.

Kaitlin Giacone added an assist, while Angelina Conant continued to play well in midfield and the team defense was as consistent as ever.

“Our defense was absolutely fantastic tonight,” Learmouth said of a unit that includes Maia Hales, Payton Goodman and Amelia Staiano. “And our goalkeeper (Claire Maples) came up big when we needed her.”

No scoring details were immediately available for McKinleyville.

At Fortuna, meanwhile, Addison Taylor and Raigan Brooks both scored for the Huskies, who got their first Big 5 win in four games.

Jocelyn Marquez and Chloe Cox each had an assist in the win.

With the victory, the Huskies improved to 3-5-1 in the Big 5.

A young Del Norte team remains winless in league play.

Next up, on Saturday, Fortuna plays at Arcata and Del Norte plays at Eureka.
