Schedule changes announced due to shortage of officials

By Ray Hamill — An anticipated shortage of officials in the coming weeks has resulted in a change of schedule for several local high school football games.

Including this weekend’s game between Eureka and St. Bernard’s at Albee Stadium, which will now take place on Saturday night.

Three other games have also been pushed back to a Saturday kickoff between now and the end of the month.

South Fork will now host Potter Valley on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m.; McKinleyville will host Hoopa on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 5 and 7:30 p.m. (JVs and varsity); and Fortuna will host Del Norte on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 5 and 7:30 p.m. (JVs and varsity).

A growing shortage of officials has affected the schedule in several local sports this year, including H-DNL baseball, soccer and basketball, all of which have had to juggle schedules to ensure enough officials are available.

Local baseball and football officials have expressed their concern about the situation, which is reportedly becoming an issue all around the country.

This Saturday’s game at Albee will also feature a JV matchup between Eureka and McKinleyville at 5 p.m., with the varsity kicking off at 7:30 p.m.
