Exciting race shaping up in H-DNL girls golf

McKinleyville’s Sofie Sunderg stretched her lead in the race for the H-DNL girls golf championship with another strong round at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course this week, but the battle for the 2021 team title is shaping up to be an exciting one.

Sundberg won for the third time in three rounds this season, shooting a 99, four strokes better than Eureka’s Ileah Brannon in second.

The Mack junior now holds a 10-stroke lead over Brannon in the season standings.

It was also another strong showing from the consistent Brannon, who has placed second at all three league events this season and helped the Loggers to the team win with her best round of the young season.

Eureka’s Gracie Christian also had a good day, shooting a 106 and knocking 19 strokes off her previous best round of the season.

Christian had the third best score of the day and was one of eight golfers in the top 10 to post a season-best round.

Teammate Mia Lopez also had a season-best score, shooting a 108 for fourth place on what was a big day for the host school.

With three of the top four finishers, the Eureka girls won the team event for the second time this season.

Arcata, however, still holds the season lead (1431), with Eureka now just three strokes back in what is an extremely tight race.

The Tigers, meanwhile, had three finishers in the top 10.

Morgan Ford shot a 111 for fifth place, with teammates Avery Meadows placing seventh (115) and Sagen Sarchett ninth (118).

Two St. Bernard’s girls also had their best showing of the season, with Hannah Fink shooting a 112 for sixth place and Allyson Hagler placing eighth with a round of 117.

McKinleyville’s Neyr-Res Bartoo rounded out the top 10 with a round of 120.

Meadows remains third in the season standings, 10 strokes behind Brannon, with Ford in fourth and Lopez in fifth.
