By Ray Hamill — If the first races of the season were any indication, it could be a very competitive fall in H-DNL cross country.
Competing at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course on Wednesday afternoon, both the varsity girls and boys races featured exciting finishes, with little to separate some of the frontrunners.
In the boys race, Arcata’s Jude Ortega won comfortably in a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds, with McKinleyville’s Damian Dinan placing second, 47 seconds back.
But the race for third went down to the wire, with McKinleyville’s Cody Rheinschmidt barely edging out Eureka’s Daniel Shaver thanks to a late push.
Check out video highlights of the boys finish above, as well as an exciting finish in the girls race in a battle of two talented juniors.
Eureka’s Charlotte Leonard placed first in a time of 20:41, just half a second ahead of Fortuna’s Ella Owsley, with the two of them neck and neck the entire race.
