By Ray Hamill — It’s been a good week for three former H-DNL golfers, with strong showings from all three early in the new season.
At the Division-I level, Allison Sobol led the Montana Grizzlies to a fifth-place finish at the season-opening Kelsey Chugg Invitational in Eden, Utah, on Tuesday.
The 2018 St. Bernard’s graduate, who is a college senior this year, finished with rounds of 76, 77 and 75 to place seventh overall, her best finish since her freshman year.
Sobol grew stronger as the three-day tournament went on, and didn’t card anything worse than a bogey over the final 47 holes.
She was the top Grizzlies finisher at the nine-team tournament.
Also in action this week, former McKinleyville standout Phoebe Sundberg shot a personal best round of 74 at the Birdie Fest at the Peacock Gap Golf Club in San Rafael on Tuesday.
Competing for Division-III Dominican University, the 2020 Mack High graduate carded an eagle and two birdies in the round.
The college sophomore placed 22nd overall at the two-day, six-team tournament, after also shooting a 79 on Monday.
Dominican placed fifth as a team.
Rounding out a big week for former H-DNL golfers, Arcata’s Avary Henry had a big showing at the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference preview tournament.
The former Arcata Tiger, who is a sophomore at D-III Aurora University in Illinois, helped the Spartans to a first-place team finish at the early-season event, which was held at the Aideen Golf Club in Illinois on Sunday.
Henry shot an 83, the third best overall score on the day, as the Spartans swept the top-three individual spots.
