A busy week of H-DNL girls soccer action continued on Wednesday night, with the McKinleyville Panthers getting the better of Del Norte 9-0 and Eureka and Arcata tying 1-1 at Albee Stadium.
On Tuesday night, the Fortuna Huskies scored two late goals to come from behind and beat St. Bernard’s 2-1.
Thea Trout netted yet another hat trick for the McKinleyville girls, her fifth in six games this season, as the Panthers put up six or more goals for the fifth time in six games.
Trout finished with four goals, as did Sofia Reyes, while Leah Circe also scored.
“We controlled and dictated the game very well,” said McKinleyville head coach Adam Canepa, whose team is now 1-0-1 in the Big 5 and 5-0-1 overall.
Tuesday’s Game
Fortuna 2, St. Bernard’s 1
A shorthanded Huskies team scored two late goals to come from behind and beat St. Bernard’s on Tuesday.
Chloe Cox was instrumental in the comeback, setting up teammate Jocelyn Ortega-Miranda for the tying goal with 16 minutes remaining, and then netting the equalizer off a Mollie Hernandez assist just six minutes from time.
“As a whole, it was a struggle for most of the game for us to adjust to new positions,” assistant coach Morgan Ferguson said. “But our defense stayed solid to give us a chance to pull the game out.”
The Huskies, who improved to 2-1, were missing several players because of injuries and COVID protocols.
Emma Wilson scored for the Crusaders, while goalkeeper Sarah McBrayer made several big saves throughout, allowing her team hold onto its lead for much of the game.
Freshmen Laila Florvilus and Siena Bullock-Martinez both also played well for the Crusaders, while Arabella Maki and Alondra Adkins “left it all on the field,” according to head coach Danny Roscoe.
