UPDATE – The RELL 11s and McKinleyville 10s both won their opening games on Thursday night. RELL won 5-0 and Mack won 7-2. Both teams advance in the winners’ bracket and will play again on Friday.
By Ray Hamill — Three local Little League All-Star teams are back in action this week at their respective Section tournaments, including the McKinleyville 12-year-olds, who will be hosting.
The Redwood Empire 11-year-old All-Stars and the McKinleyville 10s began play in Yuba City on Thursday night and both won their opening games.
All three tournaments feature district champions and are a double-elimination format.
The 12s tournament begins on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Hiller Park in McKinleyville, with four out-of-area teams joining the hosts.
There will be two games on Friday, with McKinleyville facing off against Sutter Buttes at 5:30 p.m.
The Mack All-Stars are expected to compete for the section title with a talented lineup that placed second in the state as 10-year-olds two years ago.
They marched through this year’s district tournament in dominating fashion, winning all four of their games and outscoring their opponents 46-4.
The team features 10 of the 12 players that went on that impressive state run two years ago and features a deep lineup and plenty of talent at most positions.
“Between our defense, our pitching and our hitting, we should be able to keep in most games against most teams,” head coach Carlos Avelar said.
“We’ve got seven kids we feel comfortable throwing. And we’ve got some power. We’ve got three kids that can hit it out at any time, and we’ve got some speed and our defense is solid.”
The tournament continues through Tuesday at least.
