Crusaders bounce back with big fourth quarter

The St. Bernard’s girls responded to Wednesday’s season-opening loss to Fortuna in H-DNL basketball with a clutch performance on Thursday in a 47-39 win over McKinleyville.

Trailing by two points going into the fourth quarter of a tight game, the Crusaders outscored the Panthers 18-7 in the final period to seal the win.

Both teams are now 1-1.

Lele Tanuvasa scored 23 points to lead the way for St. Bernard’s, while teammates Madelyn Shanahan added 12 and Sabrina Gardner six.

Cameron Heenan and Kathryn Tinney each scored 11 for Mack, which had opened the season with a victory over Ferndale on Wednesday night.

Kayley Armstrong also scored six points for the Panthers.

Next up, McKinleyville plays at Hoopa on Friday night, while St. Bernard’s plays Eureka on Saturday.
