Multiple basketball games canceled on opening two nights

By Ray Hamill — A short spring basketball season is getting shorter for a whole lot of teams.

The H-DNL season tipped off on Monday, but two of four varsity girls games scheduled for opening night had to be canceled because of players testing positive for COVID.

The games affected were McKinleyville and St. Bernard’s and Eureka and Arcata.

A third varsity game had to be canceled on Tuesday as well, when the Fortuna and South Fork boys game was called off.

No word yet on when any of the teams that were affected — the Arcata girls, the McKinleyville girls and the Fortuna boys — will be able to play, although they are hoping for a quick return and will know more in the coming days.

The H-DNL season is scheduled to last just three weeks.

A third game was canceled on opening night, when the girls JV matchup between McKinleyville and Del Norte in Crescent City was called off just minutes before tip off.
