Starting spots will be up for grabs for the Fortuna girls on Wednesday night, as the Huskies continue a quick H-DNL basketball season with a matchup at St. Bernard’s.
The Huskies opened a short three-week season with a lopsided win over South Fork on Monday (final score unavailable), and the players know they will have to hit the ground running.
“It was a chance to try and work on some things,” head coach Scott Betts said of the game. “We just got a couple of girls back from softball, so we’re still trying to figure out our rotation.”
The head coach has four seniors back to lead the way this year, including Gracie Betts, Saige Grundman, Kendall Stewart and Gabby Chapman, all of whom played a role in the program’s success last year when they won a first Big 5 championship for the program since the early 1980s.
Point guard Gracie Betts was one of the team’s most influential players in that championship run and will be expected to provide plenty of leadership in her final campaign.
And while four starting seniors have graduated from that championship team, both Grundman and returning junior Gabby Champman each also started several games in that run.
The head coach says that Wednesday’s game against St. Bernard’s will be a big one for his players to see who can step up and claim a starting spot.
Betts has some nice balance to his roster, with a number of big players and some outside shooting.
“We’ve got some options,” he said. “It’s such a weird year and we don’t get the preseason tournaments (to come together), but it’s going to be a fun quick three weeks.”
