The Eureka Loggers had to overcome some adversity on their way to a doubleheader sweep over Del Norte in H-DNL softball on Saturday, but kept their unbeaten run going.
The Loggers won 13-4 and 10-1 to go to 8-0 on the season.
Starting catcher and team leader McKenna Beach suffered a foot injury and is likely done for the season, while head coach Sarah Fox was also without the services of the team’s back-up catcher for personal reasons.
Sophomore Maeghan Hampton stepped in and caught both games and didn’t disappoint.
“She worked extremely hard and filled the position with confidence,” Fox said. “I’m extremely proud of her and so were her teammates.
“We had players out of position and athletes with less varsity experience step in and play their hearts out.”
Alexa Morehouse pitched the win in the opener, allowing two earned runs in seven innings and striking out three.
Kira Morris had a big game at the plate and finished 4-for-4, including a double, with a walk and an RBI.
Sadie Hampton also had a big game, finishing 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Zia Gee was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Maeghan Hampton, Salina Socha-Wright, Kaitlin Giacone, Mariah Napoleon, Wyatt Thurston and Taliyah Cooper each had one hit.
Maeghan Hampton continued her big day in game two, finishing 2-for-4, with Morris again instrumental in the win, this time in the circle, where she struck out 13 batters and allowed just one earned run in seven innings.
Napoleon added a triple, while Gee and Socha-Wright each also had a hit.
Gee also drove in two runs, while Cooper walked three times and Thurston was hit by a pitch three times.
Josephine Heuberger continued to impress for Del Norte, which dropped to 2-7.
The junior standout finished with three hits and two runs over the two games, as well as a sacrifice bunt.
Senior teammate Madison Haag also had three hits, as well as an RBI.
