The Humboldt State and College of the Redwoods athletics departments are joining forces to host the Battle of Humboldt County Esports tournament later this month.
Esports tournaments are computer game competitions between two teams that generally feature five or six players, with teams competing against each other in popular games.
All HSU and CR students are invited to participate in the event, which will run for two days on April 30 and May 1, and prizes will be awarded for the top two teams.
“It is an exciting time to launch a joint venture with our Humboldt County partners in College of the Redwoods,” HSU Athletics Director Jane Teixeira said. “(CR Athletics Director Bob Brown) and I have worked together on this event to provide an opportunity that brings together both of our institutions in a safe manner during this unprecedented time.”
Registration is now open at https://battleofhumboldtcounty.mainline.gg/directory/-/directory, with free t-shirts for the first 50 people to register.
“On behalf of our entire athletic department and College of the Redwoods student body, we are very excited to launch our first ever Esport challenge with HSU,” Brown said. “It has been a great opportunity for me personally to get to know Jane (Teixeira) better and continue growing the collaboration with HSU Athletics both on the sporting fields and virtually!”
Launch Esports will serve as the official tournament software and sponsorship sales partner of the event.
“We are grateful that the leadership of both institutions have allowed for a creative way to collaborate and virtually compete,” Teixeira said. “This is hopefully the start of many opportunities to showcase the amazing talents of our respective students.”
