The Eureka Loggers and Arcata Tigers got to play in front of fans on Thursday night, as each continued their impressive start to the new season on the volleyball court.
With a limited number of spectators allowed for the first time, both the Loggers and Tigers posted straight-game wins.
The Tigers improved to 3-0 with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-22 win over St. Bernard’s, while the Loggers improved to 2-0 after taking care of business against McKinleyville, 25-16, 25-18, 25-14.
Eureka senior Sadie Hampton, who has started the season well, finished with a team-high 11 kills in the win, while teammates Cambelle Suchanek, Madison Broese and Mariah Napoleon led the way serving.
Napoleon finished with a team-high four aces, while Suchanek had three.
Napoleon also had five kills while Suchanek capped a big all-around performance with 28 assists.
Head coach Rachel Evans described this year’s team as talented and “very coachable.”
For Arcata, Abby Costello-Anderson continued her fast start to the new season with 12 kills and seven aces against St. Bernard’s.
Avery Thornburgh also had a big night with 11 kills, while Ella Day added five kills and seven aces, and Lola Renteria had a game-high 31 assists.
A brief three-week season continues next week for the H-DNL teams.
On Monday, Hoopa plays at McKinleyville and St. Bernard’s plays at Eureka.
The unbeaten Tigers and Loggers will play each other next Thursday at Arcata.
