If the opening round of H-DNL boys golf is any indication, it should be an exciting season with little to separate the top contenders.
Including a pair of freshmen who were making their high school debuts and made an immediate impression.
Playing at Beau Pre Golf Course, just three strokes separated the top four golfers in the field, representing three different high schools.
Newcomers Jack Kramer of St. Bernard’s and Talon Vigil of Eureka led the way, tying for first with rounds of 85.
Vigil’s teammate Hunter Blevins was just one stroke back with a round of 86, with Arcata’s Kyle Plumley finishing fourth on the day with an 88.
Thanks in large part to Vigil and Blevins, the Eureka boys topped the team scores (361), with four Loggers shooting under 100, including Colton Tracy and Julian Goodman, who each shot a 95.
The Arcata Tigers were the second best team on the day (384), followed in turn by St. Bernard’s (402), Fortuna (445), McKinleyville (463) and South Fork (485).
Arcata’s Riley Moser had the fifth best round of the day with a 91, while teammates Beck Pederson (102), Victor Coonrod (103) and Cameron Leach (105) each also played well.
St. Bernard’s Kelton Chase (100) and Jake Fairfield (103) also impressed.
Nico Costanza (103) and Nate Hill (104) rounded out a good day for the Loggers.
Jayce Larkins led McKinleyville with a round of 104, while Blake Larson led Del Norte with a 107, Lucas Senestraro led Fortuna with a 109, and Cody Gamble and Drake Savage led South Fork with rounds of 119.
The next round of H-DNL golf will take place at the Redwood Golf and Country Club in Fortuna on Monday.
