Trio of teammates lead the way at H-DNL tennis championships

The Arcata trio of Mathias Severn, Finn Murphy and Aiden Waters were each crowned H-DNL champions in boys tennis on Wednesday afternoon, on the opening day of the league championships.

Playing in beautiful weather at McKinleyville, the three Tigers closed out the season on a high note by taking the titles at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles.

Severn didn’t drop a game in two matches, defeating North Coast Prep’s Owen Rau in the final at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-0.

Earlier he dispatched of Ferndale’s Seth Regli in the semifinal round by the same score.

Rau, meanwhile, got the better of St. Bernard’s Grant Omey in a much closer affair in the other semifinal, edging out a 6-5, 6-4 victory.

In the opening round, Regli defeated McKinleyville’s Derek Ray, coming from behind to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in one of the closest matches of the day.

Also in the opening round, Omey defeated Del Norte’s Tyler Stanley, 6-2, 7-5, while Severn and Rau had a bye.

No. 5 Singles

Murphy closed out an impressive season with a  6-0, 6-0 win over McKinleyville’s Azure Watrous De Salinas in the No. 5 championship match.

Earlier in the day, Murphy had to battle his way past NCP’s Gene Quinn in the semifinal, winning 6-3, 6-2 after getting an opening round bye.

The other semi was a three-set affair, with Watrous De Salinas defeating Del Norte’s Leandro Aguilar, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

In the opening round, Quinn defeated St. Bernard’s Marshall Harper, 6-2, 7-5, while Watrous De Salinas defeated Ferndale’s Kacey Luster, 6-4, 6-0.

No. 6 Singles

Waters made it a clean sweep for the Tigers on opening day, with a 6-0, 6-0 win over NCP’s Abram Rau in the No. 6 singles championship.

The three Arcata champions didn’t drop a game between them in the championship round.

After receiving a first-round bye, Waters defeated McKinleyville’s Colby Morais in the semifinal, when Morais was forced to retire due to injury early in the match.

In the other semi, Rau had to battle all the way before beating Del Norte’s Arron Vue, 6-3, 6(1)-7, 7-5.

In the only first-round match, Morais defeated St. Bernard’s Ken Tran, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

The Nos. 1-3 singles championships will be held at McKinleyville High on Saturday, beginning at noon.

There are no doubles championships this year.
