By Ray Hamill — With just two rounds remaining in the H-DNL girls golf season, the big question right now is whether anyone can prevent McKinleyville senior Isabella Sundberg from a season sweep.
The consistent Sundberg has set a blistering pace through the opening three rounds of action, comfortably winning each event.
She won by 19 strokes in the season opener at Del Norte, followed by a 17-stroke victory at Fortuna and a four-stroke win at Eureka this past week.
Only Arcata’s Mari Pepper and Kate Plumley and Fortuna’s Gracie Betts have managed to finish within 10 strokes of the league leader.
And Sundberg appears to be getting better as the season goes on, following back-to-back rounds of 88 with an 83 at Eureka.
Arcata’s Pepper appears to be best positioned to prevent a possible season sweep, having pushed the Mack standout much closer this past week and finishing just four strokes back.
The Arcata senior is second in the season standings, 21 strokes back of Sundberg.
Plumley and Betts will also be looking to beat Sundberg before the season ends and both appear to be headed in the right direction.
Both golfers have improved their scores with each round this season, with Betts shooting a 90 at Eureka and Plumley a 91, neither of them too far off Sundberg’s impressive pace.
The league plays at Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata on Monday, with the final round 10 days later at Beau Pre in McKinleyville.
As a team, the Arcata girls have dominated, with Brook Bisgrove and Kyra Always rounding out a dynamic foursome in the top eight in the season standings.
