The Eureka Loggers won a pair of H-DNL matches in boys tennis on Saturday, getting the better of North Coast Prep 2-1, before defeating St. Bernard’s 3-0.
In the opening match, there was little to separate Eureka’s Tyler Petrusha and NCP’s Caleb Weiss at No. 1 singles.
Weiss edged out the win on a tiebreaker by a score of 9-7, after the duo played out a 7-7 pro set.
Eureka, however, took the Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches, with Kishan Patel defeating Mateo Avcollie, 8-2, and Ryan Chapman edging Owen Rau, 8-6.
Kishan continues to impress as a newcomer this season, getting the win thanks to some opportunistic lobs and point-winning volleys.
It was a close matchup between Chapman and Rau, with the Eureka player getting the win thanks to some strong first serves.
“He played the net and had some great volleys,” Eureka head coach Lilly Copeland said of Chapman. “He was tough the whole match, he didn’t give up and he kept his composure.”
Eureka 3, St. Bernard’s 0
The Loggers swept all three matches against the Crusaders, with Petrusha topping Griffey Voss, 8-0, at No. 1 singles.
“Tyler dominated every point,” Copeland said of her No. 1 player, who won with some outstanding serves.
Patel got his second victory of the day at No. 2 singles, but had to fight all the way against Owen Shanahan before winning 8-5.
Chapman also got his second win of the day at No. 3 singles, defeating Grant Omey, 8-2.
Once again Chapman did a good job attacking the net on his way to securing some impressive point-winning volleys.
Next up, on Tuesday the Loggers are scheduled to play at Fortuna, while NCP travels to Arcata, St. Bernard’s hosts Ferndale, and McKinleyville plays at Del Norte.
Arcata 5, Ferndale 0
The Arcata Tigers swept all five matches against Ferndale on Saturday, improving to 4-0 in league play.
Tristan Washington continued to impress at No. 1 singles, defeating Ferndale’s Charlie Lockett in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, Finn Murphy got his second win of the week, getting the better of Hunter Chambers, 6-1, 6-0.
Mathias Severn also won, defeating Dayton Comier, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, while Austin Costello-Anderson defeated Seth Regli, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.
And rounding out the sweep for the high-flying Tigers, at No. 5 singles, Finn McRae got the better of Kacey Luster, 6-0, 6-0.
The Tigers play at St. Bernard’s on Monday.
