McKinleyville senior Isabella Sundberg lived up to her billing as league favorite this year with a dominating victory in the opening round of H-DNL girls golf in Del Norte on Thursday.
Sundberg shot an 88 to lead the field of 26 girls, who were competing in high school competition for the first time since 2019.
The season opener was the first high school competition of any kind in the H-DNL since March 12 of last year, ending a 330-day shutdown.
Sundberg shot a 45 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine, and led the field by a remarkable 19 strokes.
Kate Plumley placed second on the day with a round of 107 to lead a strong team performance by the Arcata Tigers.
Arcata had four of the top six performers on the day, including Brooke Bisgrove who shot a 110 for the third best score.
McKinleyville’s Sofie Sundberg was next best with a 113, followed by Arcata’s Mari Pepper (114) and Kyra Always (120).
Ileah Brannon paced Eureka and was seventh on the day with a 128, with Arcata’s Iris Coonrod (129) and Avary Meadows (131) rounding out the top-10.
Molly Slayton led the way for Del Norte with a round of 135.
The Arcata Tigers shot a 451 as a team, followed by McKinleyville (503), Eureka (554) and Del Norte (587).
The Fortuna girls were unable to travel for the season opener because the school is temporarily on distance learning this week.
The Huskies will be back in action when they host the second round of league play on Monday at the Redwood Golf and Country Club.
