By Ray Hamill — The Golden Valley Conference has cancelled men’s and women’s soccer for the school year after all seven schools decided to opt out.
That includes College of the Redwoods.
The Corsairs still have the opportunity to play a couple of scrimmages in order to showcase the sophomore players who might want to move on to a four-year program.
CR had previously cancelled women’s volleyball for the school year as the pandemic continues to take its toll on community and college sports.
The Corsairs, however, are still hoping to compete in men’s and women’s basketball, as well as cross country, track and field, baseball and softball.
Last week it was announced that the majority of the GVC schools are opting to play basketball, with a 12-game conference schedule for CR tentatively planned to tip off in early March.
The Corsairs are defending conference champions in both men’s and women’s basketball.
The vast majority of GVC spring teams are also still planning on competing this year, with those seasons scheduled for a mid-April start.
This week’s announcement follows in the footsteps of the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s recent decision to cancel its soccer season for men and women, leaving the North Coast without any college soccer this school year.
