By Ray Hamill — Local sports may be shut down until the new year, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some local athletes to keep tabs on in the coming weeks.
In addition to the three former H-DNL standouts playing Division-I college football for the past few weeks, there are also three former H-DNL stars playing college basketball right now.
Former St. Bernard’s standout Makenna Schoenhofer plays at D-I Seattle University and has tipped off this season fully healthy again for the first time in a few years.
The Redhawks, who feature former HSU and CR coaches Joddie and Skip Gleason as assistants, got their first win of the season on Thursday afternoon, a 75-72 OT victory over Utah State.
Seattle is now 1-2.
Schoenhofer, who is a redshirt sophomore, plays guard for the Redhawks and has contributed off the bench in all three games.
Another former H-DNL standout to keep an eye this winter is Eureka’s Alana Busby-Dunphy, a sophomore transfer who joined the Alabama women’s team this year.
Former Arcata and College of the Redwoods standout Thomas Nelson has also tipped off his season with Flagler College in Florida, seeing limited minutes in the opening few games so far as he adjusts to the new level.
Three former H-DNL stars are also currently playing Division-I college football — McKinleyville’s Kyle Spalding (San Diego State), McKinleyville’s Bryce Petersen (Akron) and Eureka’s Isaak Gutierrez (New Mexico).
