By Ray Hamill — Isaak Gutierrez will be hoping to get his first Division-I college football win when the New Mexico Lobos take on Utah State in a primetime Thanksgiving matchup in front of a national television audience.
The former Eureka standout has started all four games for the Lobos at right guard, but a young team has struggled to an 0-4 record, including a tough 28-0 defeat at Air Force this past weekend.
Something has to give on Thanksgiving, however, with Utah State also 0-4 this year.
The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 1 at 4 p.m., a primetime showdown for the East Coast audience and one of only two college football games on Thursday.
Gutierrez transferred to New Mexico earlier this year after an all-state freshman campaign at Butte College.
The former Logger, who played center at Eureka and Butte, won the starting right guard spot in training camp.
Also in action this week, another former H-DNL standout will be looking for a first win of the season, when the Akron Zips play at Miami (Ohio).
Senior center Bryce Petersen, who played at McKinleyville High, has been enjoying another strong campaign on a young Zips team that is 0-3, and he will lead the way once again on Saturday when they host a 1-1 Miami team.
The game is scheduled for 10 a.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
The San Diego State Aztecs — who feature another former McKinleyville star, left tackle Kyle Spalding — had their scheduled game against Fresno State canceled this week.
The Aztecs, who lost a key game at Nevada this past weekend, are 3-2.
