By Ray Hamill — Former McKinleyville standout Kyle Spalding enjoyed a successful start to the new college football season on Saturday, as the San Diego State Aztecs comfortably got the better of UNLV 34-6.

The senior left tackle and the rest of the Aztecs offensive line helped set the tone early as San Diego opened up a 27-0 lead in the first half and never looked back.

Next up, Spalding and the Aztecs travel to Utah State on Halloween night for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff, in a game that will be televised live across the nation on the CBS Sports Network.

Two other former H-DNL stars are also scheduled to play in front of a national television audience in the coming week.

On Saturday afternoon, former Eureka Logger Isaak Gutierrez will make his debut with the New Mexico Lobos when they travel to San Jose State to play the Spartans.

Gutierrez, a sophomore, is expected to start at right guard after transferring from Butte College early in the year.

The Lobos’ season opener was set for this past weekend against Colorado State, but the game was canceled because of a spike in COVID-19 cases in the area.

Because of the continuing COVID-10 concerns, this coming weekend’s game was moved to San Jose and will be televised live on Fox Sports 1 at 4 p.m.

The Spartans are 1-0 after getting the better of Air Force in their opener.

University of Akron Athletics – Bryce Petersen

A second former McKinleyville Panther, Bryce Petersen, will also make his season debut in front of a national television audience when the Akron Zips kick off their campaign on Wednesday of next week.

The Zips, who will play three straight midweek games to begin their season, will open against Western Michigan at 3 p.m., with the game being broadcast live on ESPN 3.

Petersen is a senior starting center for Akron.
