By Ray Hamill — Local softball standout Courtney Christensen has joined the College of the Redwoods coaching staff and will be an assistant under long-time head coach Maggie White this year.
Christensen, who graduated Fortuna High in 2015 after a stellar career with the Huskies, also played at both CR and Humboldt State.
She replaces former assistant coach Megan Valente, who has left to take up an assistant coach role at Adams State.
“She’s very versatile,” White said of Christensen, who will have a lot of responsibilities. “As a player she played pitcher, she played first, and also she was a long ball hitter, so she can work with our hitters and all the infield really. And she’s been working with our pitchers.”
Christensen enjoyed a standout playing career, earning all-league honors all four years at Fortuna, including being named Big 5 MVP as a freshman.
The power hitter was also named first team All-Golden Valley Conference during her one season at CR, as well as being named to the All-NorCal team.
She is tied for the school record for most home runs in a single season, with eight.
And the switch to the coaching ranks appears to be going smoothly.
“It’s been good, and the players have responded very well,” White said.
