By Ray Hamill — Louis Cosce and his trainer Brian Wilson both paid tribute to striking coach Brian Blackburn ahead of Tuesday’s big MMA fight in the Dana White Contender Series.
Blackburn joined the Lost Boys Gym in Arcata a year ago and has had an immediate impact with the fighters there, including Cosce.
“He’s changed my game by a ton,” Cosce said earlier this week in a podcast interview on Kumite TV.
Louis arrived in Las Vegas on Saturday along with his brother Orion, who fights out of the Alpha Male Gym in Sacramento and also will be fighting in the Dana White Contender Series on the same night.
Both brothers are 6-0 as pros and a potential UFC contract will be up for grabs in what will be the biggest night of their careers.
And Wilson believes Blackburn has played a major role in helping his fighters improve, describing him as one of the best around.
“He’s the best striking coach in Northern California, and debatably in all of California,” the trainer said. “He came in and worked out with some of the guys in the gym (last year) and everybody was blown away.”
According to Wilson, Blackburn’s experience has helped tremendously.
“He’s lived in Thailand and he’s trained with some of the best guys to ever do this,” Wilson said. “He’s just brought a whole different level of experience.”
When he’s not busy in the gym, Blackburn is a Kinesiology professor at Humboldt State.
He will be cage-side with the brothers on Tuesday night, with the action being broadcast live on ESPN Plus.
